Have you had a teacher or a boss who changed your life? One of the things they did was probably to communicate their high expectations to you.

This is called the Pygmalion Effect. It refers to a psychological phenomenon where higher expectations lead to improved performance in others. It is a positive form of self-fulfilling prophecy.

How To Use The Pygmalion Effect

When someone thinks highly of us, we work hard to maintain that reputation.

If you are fresh out of school, your first manager is likely to be the most influential in your career. The strong belief in your talent (or lack of) may set the foundations of what you achieve in the future.

If you are a first time manager, you are more effective at expressing low expectations to your team than you imagine. In fact, positive feelings are not usually communicated enough.

Also note that in order for your team to be motivated to reach high levels of productivity, they must consider your expectations to be realistic and achievable.

It might not work all the time

When we don’t feel that our bosses or teachers have high expectations of us, we may feel discouraged, which will negatively impact our behavior. This is when the belief in ourselves becomes our constant source of motivation.
