How do you know if you are contented or just in your comfort zone?

A personal case study from me

Hi!

Like Q1 of 2024, April has gone by in a flash!

Over lunch on Friday, someone asked me why I am still staying put at my current role. His impression was that I had out grown my role.

I had thought about it before and wasn’t surprised. So I openly shared my reasons.

But his question kept resurfacing in my mind

And I finally figured what it was today, I actually feel contented about how my job fits my lifestyle and supports it. However, now I am questioning whether its an excuse to stay in my comfort zone.

I don’t see it as doubting myself. Rather it is a clarification coming from within. It can be a useful challenge.

So, how do I test that?

In good old coaching fashion, I researched for questions that could help. My honest responses below:

When was the last time I tried something new?

Just 2 weeks ago, I started my Advanced Coaching Course. So pretty recent!

How much am I learning and growing right now?

Work wise, I am in a comfortable space and ready to stretch. I’ve been looking for internal opportunities. There are things not within my control and I’ve found peach with it.

Coaching wise, I am picking up new concepts and refining my niche. I also just joined a women’s network and working with new people.

Do I feel I am doing much, or not enough?

One thing I observed about myself is I always feel like I am not doing enough. So I end up feeling guilty all the time. What I’ve actively done differently is focus on doing the right things and how I feel about it. And not more things.

When was the last time I took a risk?

I have been reaching out to new people to offer coaching. So I had taken plenty of risks (and rejections)!

Do I feel like it’s time for a shift or a change?

Not really, I feel that I can only manage 1-2 big changes well at the same time. It is actually a good thing that I can find space and energy to pursue new things outside.

My conclusion here is:

It’s because I have pushed myself outside of my comfort zone outside of my job, I can feel contented overall.

I reached the same conclusion as before but feel more convicted about my choices through these clarifications.

Are you also wondering if you are too comfortable or just contented? Try it out and let me know!
