Being honest is a better way of being

Back to basics.

Hi and happy weekend!

Things are definitely picking up with Advanced Coach Training starting. While it has been invigorating to see familiar faces, what’s more invigorating is the energy in the space.

Everything learnt in there can really be applied to any part of our lives.

Alignment of the head, heart and hands

One of the fundamental concepts we are learning now is alignment in a person using the 3Hs - Head, Heart and Hands model.

This is a framework, introduced by educationalist David Orr in the 1990s.

You can see when the Head (logic), Heart (emotions) and Hands (actions) are aligned, it leads to alignment and high performance.

You may ask “what does that actually look like?” To most of us, it is easier to spot a misalignment because I think we can all relate to it. Two real examples of mine:

Example 1: Remember the last time you wanted a snack and couldn’t decide whether to have it or not? I spent the whole night wondering if I should have that cup noodles. I feel annoyed I can’t have what I want.

Example 2: What about the time you wanted to grow new knowledge and can’t bring yourself to do it? I spent the weekend thinking about reading but go back to browsing the internet. I go to bed feeling guilty and promise I’ll do it next weekend.

That’s all these 3 parts of me saying something different.

“Symptoms” of misalignment look like:

  • Procrastination

  • Guilt

  • Frustration

  • Confusion

  • Heaviness

Being honest that there is a misalignment is the first step to doing something about it

And unsurprisingly, the symptoms of alignment are the opposite:

  • Procrastination <> Action

  • Guilt <> Accomplishment

  • Frustration <> Peace

  • Confusion <> Clarity

  • Heaviness <> Lightness/Relief

I would choose being in the state of alignment any day!
